Industrial phones are designed for harsh environmental conditions that would damage standard office phones. Protection classes to IEC 60529 (IP65: dust-tight, water-jet protected; IP67: additionally short-term submersible) protect against moisture, dust, vibration and mechanical impact. For hazardous areas (Zones 1/2 and 21/22), ATEX-certified industrial phones per ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU are mandatory. FHF Funke+Huster Fernsig specialises in Ex-protected and industrial phones in steel or stainless steel enclosures. Modern industrial phones support SIP, PoE power supply and integrate into existing IP PBX infrastructure.

▶ What does ATEX approval mean for industrial phones?

ATEX (French: ATmosphères EXplosibles) refers to European Directive 2014/34/EU for equipment used in explosive atmospheres. ATEX-certified industrial phones prevent electrical sparks or surface temperatures from igniting an explosive atmosphere. Classification is into equipment groups (I: mining, II: other) and categories (1: very high risk, 2: high risk, 3: normal risk).

▶ What IP protection class do I need for an industrial phone in production?

For typical production environments with dust and occasional water jets, IP65 is sufficient. In areas with high-pressure cleaning or submersion risk, IP67 or IP69K is recommended. For outdoor areas with frost, the operating temperature range should also be checked (–25 °C to +60 °C is standard for quality industrial phones). Protection class is defined per DIN EN 60529.

▶ Can industrial phones be integrated into an existing SIP PBX?

Yes – most modern industrial phones support the SIP protocol (RFC 3261) and can be integrated as SIP endpoints into any compatible IP PBX (Agfeo, Auerswald, Innovaphone, etc.).
