🔐 IE-Authenticator – portable Windows authenticator with filter function
|
The IE-Authenticator is a portable, open-source authenticator for Windows. It generates counter- and time-based one-time passwords (HOTP / TOTP) in accordance with RFC 6238 and is compatible with common implementations such as the Google Authenticator and the Microsoft Authenticator. This lets you manage any number of two-factor accounts centrally on the Windows workstation – ideal for administrators, service accounts and teams that need TOTP codes outside of a smartphone. The IE-Authenticator is based on WinAuth 3.6.2 and has been extended with a filter and search function: when many accounts are stored, the list can be filtered by name in real time, so the required code is found instantly. 🔧 Fork notice
|
| ⭐ New in this fork: filter and search function Anyone managing many authenticator entries knows the problem: scrolling through long lists costs time. The IE-Authenticator adds an input field to WinAuth 3.6.2 that filters the displayed accounts by name in real time. This makes the required code findable within seconds – even with dozens of stored services – without changing the proven WinAuth operating logic. |

📁 Shared use via a network drive
Because the IE-Authenticator is portable, the program file IE-Authenticator.exe and the configuration file winauth.xml can be copied together into a folder on a network drive or file share. If winauth.xml is located in the same directory as the EXE, the application automatically starts in portable mode and uses this shared file. This allows several workstations or team members to use the same set of authenticators without creating them multiple times. Note: we recommend securing access to the directory via file permissions and additionally encrypting the accounts with a password. To avoid conflicts, the file should not be opened simultaneously by multiple users with write access.

Features at a glance
All proven WinAuth features – complemented by the new filter function.
| 🔍 Filter & search (new) Real-time filtering of the authenticator list by name. Finds the required code within seconds, even with many stored accounts. | 🔒 Multiple authenticator services Supports any service based on Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or RFC-6238 TOTP. Unlimited accounts, each with its own name and icon. |
💾 Portable
A single executable with no installation – runs from a USB stick or cloud folders. If winauth.xml is in the program folder, the app runs in portable mode.

| 🔑 Encryption & security All private data is encrypted with your own password (salt + key strengthening). Optionally, the file can be bound to a machine or user account via Windows DPAPI so that it cannot be opened on any other system. | ⚡ Automatic or on demand Each entry shows the code either automatically with continuous refresh – or only calculates it on click. Codes are drawn directly onto the screen (protection against window spying). | ⌨ Hotkeys & code injection Each authenticator can be assigned a hotkey: display the code, copy it to the clipboard or inject it directly into other applications via script. Scripts are part of the encrypted data. | ||
Compatibility with WinAuth
Seamless migration from existing WinAuth installations – without re-creating accounts.
|
The IE-Authenticator reads and writes the same configuration format as WinAuth 3.x. An existing winauth.xml – by default in the Windows roaming profile or in the program folder (portable mode) – can be adopted unchanged. All accounts, icons, hotkeys and protection settings are preserved. Before any switch or update we recommend creating an unencrypted backup copy of the authenticator file and noting the SECRET keys separately. This way the previous state can be restored at any time. As a fork built on WinAuth 3.6.2, the IE-Authenticator benefits from the proven, long-established code base and merely adds the productivity-enhancing filter function. |

Privacy, GDPR & offline operation
No data transmission to the internet – all authenticator data stays local on your system.
|
The IE-Authenticator transmits no authenticator or user data to the internet. All accounts, SECRET keys and settings are stored exclusively in the local, encrypted The program works fully offline as long as the system clock is accurate – because time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) are calculated solely from the stored key and the current time. An internet connection is not required to generate codes. If a connection is available, the application can optionally synchronise the time with the Google time server to compensate for any drift of the local clock. Only the server time is queried – no account or authenticator data is sent. This synchronisation ensures that the generated codes remain valid even if the system clock runs inaccurately. |

Installation & getting started
Ready to use in a few steps – with no setup routine.
|
1. Download & extract
Download the ZIP file and extract it. There is nothing to install – just one executable. Double-click
IE-Authenticator.exe to start. |
2. Add an authenticator
Click “Add”, choose the type (usually “Authenticator”), enter a name and paste the service’s SECRET key. Check it with “Verify” and save with “OK”.
|
3. Protect & use
Set a password for encryption (optionally bind to your Windows account). The codes are then shown with a countdown – quickly findable at any time via the filter field.
