Patch Panels
Patch panels are the central element of every structured network cabling system to ISO/IEC 11801 and EN 50173. They consolidate all horizontal data cables from offices in the distribution room onto a 19-inch strip and enable flexible, quickly changeable connections via patch cables to the switch. Patch panels for structured TK cabling are available in performance classes Cat.3 (analogue telephony, ISDN), Cat.5e, Cat.6 and Cat.6A (10GBase-T, 500 MHz). Connection boxes are connected via LSA-Plus insulation displacement contacts (to DIN EN 50154) for LSA patch panels; keystone patch panels use separate exchangeable keystone modules. Slimline patch panels (1U, 24–48 ports) save space in small 19-inch network cabinets; patch panels with integrated cable management reduce the effort for neat cable routing. For large cabling projects, manufacturers such as Telegartner and EFB-Elektronik offer fully channel-certified systems (cable + box + patch panel). |

Frequently Asked Questions
▶ What is the difference between an LSA patch panel and a keystone patch panel? In an LSA patch panel, the conductors of the connection cables are terminated directly on fixed LSA-Plus IDC contacts – no tools required except the IDC punch-down tool, very robust connection. A keystone patch panel has interchangeable module slots: keystone jacks (RJ45, SC-duplex, etc.) can be inserted as needed – more flexible, but jacks must be procured separately. |
▶ How many ports do I need for my office? As a rule of thumb: 2 ports per workstation (1x data, 1x phone/VoIP), plus approximately 20% reserve for future expansion and technical areas (printers, APs, cameras). Example: 20 workstations = approx. 48 ports (2x 24-port patch panel or one 48-port patch panel). Additionally plan separate ports for servers, NAS and network cameras. |
▶ Can I use a Cat.5e patch panel for Cat.6 cabling? No – the patch panel is part of the permanent link (per ISO/IEC 11801) and must have at least the same class as the installed cable. A Cat.5e patch panel limits the channel to class D (100 MHz, max. 1 Gbit/s), even if Cat.6 cables and Cat.6 outlets are used. For future-proof 10GBase-T installations, we recommend consistent Cat.6A (class EA, 500 MHz). |
