Electrical Isolation in Medical Technology – Patient Protection by Standard
|
Electrical isolators for medical technology are components and systems that deliberately interrupt galvanic connections between circuits – without blocking the functional signal or energy transfer. In clinical environments, they prevent leakage currents, potential transfer and device-internal interference from entering the human body via patient-connected electrodes, probes or catheters. Even AC currents in the microampere range can trigger ventricular fibrillation when applied via direct cardiac catheters – electrical isolation is therefore not optional but a mandatory regulatory requirement. The governing standard is IEC 60601-1(EN 60601-1): Medical Electrical Equipment – General Requirements for Basic Safety and Essential Performance. It defines two protection paths: MOPP(Means of Protection from Patient) protects the patient from hazardous voltages generated by the device; MOOP(Means of Protection from Operator) protects operating personnel. Application class (Group 1 or 2) and insulation type (basic, double or reinforced) determine the required creepage distances, air clearances and insulation ratings.
