Ergonomic Phones – Technical Background & Applications

Ergonomic phones are designed for people with motor, sensory or cognitive impairments. In the commercial sector, they play a role in care facilities, public authorities and companies with older workforces. Large button phones with high-contrast labelling and tactile feedback ease operation for users with visual impairment or limited fine motor control. Many models have an SOS emergency call direct key. Amplified phones amplify the handset by up to 40 dB above normal level – relevant for people with hearing loss. The HAC certification (Hearing Aid Compatible, ETSI EN 301 843) indicates how well a phone works with hearing aids and cochlear implants (M and T ratings). Screen phones with large displays (4–7 inches) and simplified menu navigation are suitable for users with cognitive impairments.

General office phones (analogue, ISDN, IP) are at Corded Phones and IP System Phones. Headsets for hands-free operation under Headsets. Accessibility questions: sales@industry-electronics.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶ What do M and T ratings mean for HAC phones?
M ratings (microphone coupling, M1–M4) indicate how well a phone works with hearing aids oriented towards microphone coupling – M4 is the highest rating and means minimal interference. T ratings (T1–T4) concern telecoil coupling (inductive). A phone rated M3/T4 works well for most hearing aids. In Germany, the BITKOM recommendation is to offer at least M3/T3 in call centres.
▶ What legal requirements apply to accessible communication technology?
The BGG (Disability Equality Act) and the BFSG (Accessibility Strengthening Act, from 2025) require companies with more than 10 employees to offer digital products and services accessibly. For telecommunications terminal equipment, the European EN 301 549 applies as the technical standard for accessibility. Stricter requirements apply to public institutions and authorities (BITV 2.0).
▶ Can ergonomic phones also be operated on IP PBX systems?
Yes – many manufacturers (Auerswald, Tiptel, Gigaset) offer ergonomic models with SIP support that can operate as IP subscribers on any SIP-capable PBX or cloud telephone system. Analogue ergonomic phones can be used on IP systems via an ATA adapter. All ergonomic functions (volume, large keys, HAC) are retained.
