DECT Base Stations
DECT base stations are the interface between the DECT radio network and the PBX or SIP server. They register handsets via DECT and forward calls via ISDN S0 or SIP (CAT-iq). IP DECT base stations (e.g. Gigaset N300/N510/N720 IP PRO, Snom M700) communicate via SIP directly with IP PBX systems or SIP providers and are powered by PoE. Multi-cell DECT systems chain multiple base stations (maximum 6–10 for Gigaset N720) via LAN and enable seamless handover over large areas. GAP-compatible base stations accept handsets from different manufacturers for basic functions.

▶ How many handsets can be registered at one DECT base? A standard DECT base station typically supports 6–8 registered handsets, of which 4–8 can call simultaneously (depending on channel capacity). Professional base stations for multi-cell systems (Gigaset N720) support up to 100+ handsets collectively with the appropriate number of base stations. |
▶ Do I need a PoE switch for IP DECT base stations? IP DECT base stations such as Gigaset N510/N720 are powered via PoE (IEEE 802.3af, 15.4 W). A PoE-capable switch or PoE injector is therefore a prerequisite. Alternatively, 12V DC power adapters (if available) can be used. The advantage of PoE: base stations can be positioned flexibly as long as a network cable is available. |
▶ Can DECT base stations be networked across different buildings? Yes, IP DECT base stations can be networked via LAN/WAN – also across site boundaries (VPN connection required). Latency and packet jitter must be controlled (<150 ms round trip recommended). Handover between sites only works with a jointly managed DECT controller (e.g. Gigaset N720 DM PRO as central management unit). |
