DECT system phones combine the advantages of cordless DECT mobility with the full feature set of a professional PBX. Unlike consumer DECT devices, they support manufacturer-specific DECT profiles (Auerswald proprietary, Agfeo DECT, Gigaset N-DECT) or open standards such as CAT-iq 2.0 (for IP PBX systems). DECT SIP (also SIP-DECT) is a combination of the DECT radio standard and the SIP protocol: the handset registers via DECT at a base station, which in turn communicates via SIP with an IP PBX or SIP trunk. DECT SIP is needed when you want to operate cordless DECT devices on a purely IP-based system without proprietary DECT interfaces – maximum flexibility and manufacturer independence. |
▶ How many base stations do I need for a multi-cell DECT system? The number depends on area, building structure and simultaneous calls. As a guideline: one DECT base covers approx. 30–50 m indoors (depending on walls and materials). Each base supports up to 8 simultaneous calls (DECT channel capacity). For an operation with 100 handsets and 20 simultaneous calls over 5,000 m², approx. 5–8 base stations are needed. Professional planning with DECT coverage measurement is recommended. |
▶ Can different handset models be registered at one base? Yes – with base stations supporting GAP or CAT-iq, handsets from different manufacturers can be registered. However, advanced system phone functions (PBX phone book, key assignment, DECT handover) are usually only fully available with manufacturer-matched handsets. Tip: Gigaset N-DECT base stations are open for GAP but offer proprietary extensions only for Gigaset handsets. |
