Analogue Telephone Systems – Product Details & Advice
Analogue telephone systems (a/b systems) connect multiple analogue phones via a shared exchange line and offer basic functions such as hold, transfer and call diversion. They are particularly robust, easy to operate and continue working during power outages (emergency power via phone line). Typical for small offices (2–8 extensions) and tradespeople who do not need complex TK infrastructure. In the all-IP era, analogue systems are often operated with ATA adapters on the SIP router.

Frequently Asked Questions
▶ What is the difference between an analogue and ISDN telephone system? An analogue system connects simple a/b phones with a single analogue exchange line. An ISDN system uses the digital S0 bus, allows two simultaneous calls per BRI, offers CLIP/CLIR and can manage multiple MSN numbers. For more than 5 extensions or higher requirements, ISDN or today IP is recommended. |
▶ Can DECT cordless phones be operated on analogue systems? Yes, DECT base stations with analogue a/b connection can be connected directly to analogue extensions of the telephone system. However, only the basic functions of the system (call diversion, hold) are available – no proprietary DECT system phone functions. |
▶ Are there still new analogue telephone systems? True new systems with multiple analogue exchange lines are barely produced any more. Available are small 2-line systems for SOHO environments and combined Analogue/ISDN/IP systems (e.g. Auerswald COMpact 4000) with integrated analogue ports for legacy devices. |
