The Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) is an exchangeable transceiver module used in compatible active devices. It is smaller than all currently available form factors, providing the highest density per line interface. Many of today’s networking products are already equipped with slots for modular optical transceivers, offering users maximum flexibility in network configuration. Thanks to its special design, installation can also be performed during operation (hot swap) without interrupting the network.

The selection of the appropriate SFP module depends on the type of cable medium used (multimode, single mode, simplex, twisted pair) and the required bandwidth. Standards such as the Multi Source Agreement (MSA) and the SFF-8472 specification ensure a standardized design and offer additional features like optional digital diagnostic functionality.

SFP modules with a maximum bandwidth of up to 1.25 GBit/s support Gigabit Ethernet and Gigabit Fibre Channel. Depending on the model, they are optimized for different ranges, wavelengths, and environmental conditions.
