Type J - The Swiss Mains Plug (SEV 1011)
Three round 4 mm pins in a hexagonal pattern, recessed socket throat - the Swiss take on protective-earth design.
The Type J plug per SEV 1011 is the Swiss national mains plug, also used in Liechtenstein. Three 4 mm round pins arranged hexagonally in a recessed socket - the recess prevents accidental finger contact with live pins. Rated 10 A at 230 V. The Europlug Type C is fully compatible (slim 2-pin) and used widely on small Swiss devices that do not require protective earth. There is also a 16 A variant (Type J16) with thicker pins for higher loads.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Schuko fit a Swiss socket?
No. The Swiss socket recess is too narrow for the Schuko body, and the earth contacts are positioned differently. Use a CH travel adapter or a Type J cord.
Type J vs J16 - what is the difference?
J16 has thicker pins (5 mm vs 4 mm) and is rated 16 A. The socket is also different - a J10 plug fits a J16 socket but not the other way round.
Are Europlugs allowed in Switzerland?
Yes - the slim Europlug Type C fits Swiss J sockets without protective earth. Common on phone chargers, lamps and other class II devices.
