3Com Corporation was founded in 1979 by Robert Metcalfe, co-inventor of Ethernet. The company played a key role in the commercialisation of Ethernet networks and was for decades one of the most important manufacturers of network interface cards (NICs), managed switches, routers and network infrastructure for enterprises and data centres.

The 3COM portfolio included managed and unmanaged Ethernet switches from the Baseline, OfficeConnect and SuperStack series, 10/100/1000 Mbit/s NICs for PCI and PCI Express, routers, modems and wireless access points. The SuperStack 3 series was an industry-standard product for enterprise networking and data centre infrastructure throughout the 2000s.

Are 3COM switches still receiving firmware updates?

Following the HP acquisition in 2010, the 3COM product line was integrated into the HPE Networking portfolio. New firmware updates for older 3COM devices are generally no longer available. For security-critical network segments, Lieske recommends migrating to current HPE Aruba or other managed switch platforms. For non-critical legacy installations, existing firmware remains operational.

Are 3COM SuperStack switches compatible with modern networking equipment?

Yes. 3COM SuperStack switches support open IEEE standards (802.3, 802.1Q VLAN, LACP link aggregation) and are therefore fully interoperable with switches from other vendors (Cisco, HPE, Juniper). They can be integrated as access or distribution switches in mixed networks, provided the protocol requirements of the network design are met.

Are there successor products for 3COM switches available at Lieske?
