TSC Auto ID – label printing for warehouse and production

TSC Auto ID Technology was founded in Taiwan in 1991 and builds thermal printers for automatic identification. Printing happens where a label accompanies goods through warehouse, dispatch and production – and where it has to stay legible until the goods arrive.

In our range label printers form the largest group, closely followed by thermal transfer ribbons. Added to this are receipt rolls, replacement printheads, receipt printers and labels. The ribbons come in the three usual grades: wax, wax/resin and resin.

In operation, pairing ribbon and label is the real decision. A wax ribbon on plastic film does not hold, a resin ribbon on plain paper is needlessly expensive – and both only become apparent once the labels have been printed.

Frequently asked questions

Which thermal transfer ribbon suits my label?It follows the substrate: wax for plain paper, wax/resin for coated paper and light stress, resin for plastic films and marking that has to withstand abrasion, moisture or chemicals. A wax ribbon on film wipes off – that is the most common mistake.

What does the figure in dots per millimetre mean?It describes the resolution of the printhead; 8 dots per millimetre correspond to 203 dpi. For shipping labels and common barcodes that is sufficient. Fine text, small barcodes and component marking need the higher resolution.

When is the printhead due for replacement?When vertical light lines appear in the print image that remain after cleaning – individual heating dots have then failed. Service life depends strongly on ribbon grade and print heat; a contrast setting that is too high wears the head faster than necessary.
