IP System Phones (SIP) – Technical Background & Applications
SIP IP phones (Session Initiation Protocol, RFC 3261) are the standard for all modern VoIP installations and completely replace ISDN system phones in new installations. They connect via Ethernet and can be powered directly via the network cable through PoE (Power over Ethernet, IEEE 802.3af/at) – without a separate mains adapter. High-quality SIP phones support HD Voice (G.722, 50–7,000 Hz) and wideband codecs that significantly improve voice quality compared to ISDN. Quality assurance is achieved via QoS (Quality of Service, DSCP/CoS marking) in the network. Manufacturers such as Snom and Yealink offer series from entry-level desk phones to executive comfort phones with colour display, Bluetooth, USB and integrated DECT dongle. Microsoft Teams-certified IP phones (e.g. Yealink T5x, Poly Edge E series) integrate directly into Teams and show presence status, calendar entries and Teams contacts on the display. Provisioning via TR-069, TFTP or manufacturer-specific cloud platforms (e.g. Snom SRAPS, Yealink RPS) enables zero-touch deployment for large rollouts.
IP PBX counterparts: Telephone Systems. DECT system phones for cordless variant: DECT System Phones. Headsets for SIP phone connection: Headsets. All-IP migration and pilot installation: +49 (0)7666 / 88499-0.

Frequently Asked Questions
▶ What is PoE and how much power does it deliver? PoE (Power over Ethernet) feeds direct current over the data conductors of the Ethernet cable (Cat.5e or better). Standards: IEEE 802.3af (PoE): max. 15.4 W at switch port (12.95 W at device) – sufficient for most SIP phones. IEEE 802.3at (PoE+): max. 30 W – for phones with colour display, WiFi and USB charging. IEEE 802.3bt (PoE++): max. 60 or 100 W – for cameras, APs, panels. The switch must support PoE and have sufficient budget for all ports. |
▶ How do I register a SIP phone with my IP PBX? Basic requirement: PBX with SIP server (Auerswald COMpact, FRITZ!Box, Asterisk/FreePBX, 3CX, etc.) and a configured SIP account. On the phone, configure: SIP server IP (or FQDN), SIP username (extension), SIP password and optionally registrar/proxy. Most manufacturers support auto-provisioning via DHCP option 66 (TFTP server) or manufacturer-specific cloud URLs – then MAC address entry in the PBX suffices for zero-touch. |
▶ What is the difference between a SIP phone and an IP system phone? A SIP phone implements only the open SIP protocol (RFC 3261) – it works manufacturer-independently with any SIP server. An IP system phone additionally supports manufacturer-specific PBX extensions: e.g. Auerswald COMfortel for Auerswald systems with COMfortel app functions (speed dial, busy lamp field, attendant console). These additional functions are only available when phone and system are from the same manufacturer or explicitly compatible. |
