Frequently Asked Questions
▶ Are PMR446 radios licence-free? Yes – PMR446 (446.0–446.2 MHz) is licence-free and fee-free throughout the EU, regulated by EC Decision 2006/771/EC and amendments. Maximum transmit power is limited to 0.5 W ERP and antennas must be fixed. For longer ranges or data services, licensed DMR frequencies must be applied for with the Federal Network Agency. |
▶ What is the difference between analogue radio and DMR (digital radio)? Analogue radio transmits voice as a modulated electrical signal (FM). DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) digitises voice with the AMBE+2 codec, achieving higher voice quality even in poor reception, allows AES-256 encryption and data services (GPS tracking, text messages), and uses channels more efficiently via TDMA (two time slots per frequency). DMR devices are often backwards-compatible with analogue operation. |
▶ What range do professional radios achieve? Range depends heavily on terrain, buildings and frequency. Rules of thumb: PMR446 handhelds: 1–3 km (urban) to 5 km (line of sight). DMR handhelds at 5 W: 5–10 km in open terrain. DMR mobile with repeater: up to 40 km. TETRA network (emergency services): nationwide coverage. For indoor applications (production halls, buildings), we recommend range tests before purchase. |
