Analogue Connection Boxes (TAE) – Product Details & Advice
TAE sockets (Telekommunikations-Anschluss-Entität) are the German standard home connection for analogue phones, fax machines and modems. They are 6-pin and available in three codings: NFN (phone/fax), NFT (NTBA/ISDN) and NFF (fax, 6-pin). Surface-mount boxes are screwed directly to the wall; flush-mount boxes are inserted into a standard switch box (per DIN 49073). TAE connectors follow DIN VDE 0604-3 and are locking (coding prevents incorrect plug insertion). In new installations, TAE sockets are often replaced by RJ45 outlets that can also connect TAE devices via adapters.
ISDN connection boxes: ISDN Connection Boxes. RJ45 patch panels: Patch Panels.
Frequently Asked Questions
▶ What do NFN, NFT and NFF mean for TAE sockets? NFN (Normal-Fernmelde-Nebenstellen): analogue phones and fax without special requirements – most common. NFT (Normal-Fernmelde-Terminal): for ISDN NTBA (NT1) and ISDN terminals with T interface – narrower plug. NFF (Normal-Fernmelde-Fax): for fax machines, 6-pin but differently coded than NFN. The coding prevents accidental insertion of wrong devices. |
▶ Can I install a TAE socket myself? Connecting a TAE socket to the internal house wiring (after the NTBA) is permitted in Germany and is not an intervention in the network operator's area. The connection before the NTBA (subscriber line) may only be made by the network operator. For self-installation: correctly assign conductor colours (a/b conductor per DIN), tighten screw terminals firmly. |
▶ Can multiple TAE sockets be connected in series? Yes – up to 3 TAE sockets can be operated in series (bus) on the internal house connection. The first socket is connected to the next via pass-through contacts. Note: too many terminals (impedance) affect signal quality. Recommendation: max. 3 terminals in parallel, no active device as the last in the chain. |
