Wired Headsets – Product Details & Advice
Wired headsets are the classic solution for call centres and high-frequency phone workstations: no battery problems, maximum reliability, often cheaper than wireless variants. QD connector (Quick Disconnect, 4P4C) enables quick detachment of the headset from the phone cable without tangling; various adapter options at the other end (RJ9, USB, 3.5 mm). USB headsets (USB-A or USB-C) operate directly on PC or laptop using the integrated USB audio driver; ideal for softphones (Cisco Jabber, Avaya Equinox, MS Teams). Mono headsets (single-sided) are standard for call centres; duo headsets (double-sided) reduce ambient noise better and are suitable for open-plan offices.
Wireless variants: Wireless Headsets. Spare parts and cables: Headset Spare Parts.
Frequently Asked Questions
▶ What is a QD connector and what adapters are available? QD (Quick Disconnect, 4P4C): standardised connector that separates the headset cable from the phone cable plug – easy detachment and connection. Adapters: QD to RJ9 (phone handset socket), QD to USB, QD to 3.5 mm, QD to RJ11. Jabra, Plantronics and EPOS use slightly different QD standards – not always cross-compatible. |
▶ How do I clean a headset hygienically in a multi-user environment? Leatherette or faux fur ear cushions can be wiped with 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes. Replaceable ear cushions (available separately as spare parts) should be changed every 1–3 months with regular user changes. Clean microphone boom and cable with a damp cloth without solvents. |
▶ What standard applies to sound pressure limitation in headsets? EU Directive 2003/10/EC (noise at work) limits sound exposure to 80 dB(A) as a daily value. Headsets with ActiveProtect (Jabra) or SoundGuard (Plantronics/EPOS) automatically limit peak levels to 118 dB and protect against sudden loud events (fax tone, wrong call). Such protection functions are legally recommended for call centre use. |
