Headsets – Technical Background & Applications

Professional headsets improve speech clarity, relieve neck/shoulder muscles and enable hands-free working. For call centre use, wired mono headsets with QD connector (Quick Disconnect) and interfaces for PBX, USB or RJ9/RJ11 are standard. Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) in the microphone filters out background noise when speaking – critical in noisy production environments. HD Voice / Wideband (G.722 codec) doubles the transmitted frequency range to 50–7,000 Hz, significantly improving speech clarity versus narrowband (G.711: 300–3,400 Hz). UC certification ensures compatibility with Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, Zoom and other UC platforms.

Wireless DECT headsets offer freedom of movement up to 100 m (office) without quality loss. Bluetooth headsets are suitable for hybrid use (PC and smartphone). Accessories such as adapters, replacement ear cushions and cables are in the Headsets category. Demo devices for testing on request: +49 (0)7666 / 88499-0.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶ What is the difference between DECT and Bluetooth headsets?
DECT headsets (1.88–1.90 GHz) are optimised for office telephony: up to 100 m range, interference-free operation in the DECT frequency band, low latency (20–25 ms) and high voice quality even at distance. Bluetooth headsets (2.4 GHz) offer broader device compatibility (smartphone, laptop, tablet) but shorter range (up to 30 m) and potential WiFi interference. For pure office/call centre use, we recommend DECT.
▶ What does UC certification mean for headsets?
UC certification (Unified Communications) means the headset has been officially tested and approved by a UC platform vendor (Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, Zoom, Avaya). UC-certified headsets support inline call control (answer/end call, volume, mute) directly via headset controls – without going through the software interface. This is particularly relevant for home office and hybrid work.
▶ Which headset is suitable for very noisy production environments?
For extreme noisy environments (sound levels > 85 dB), we recommend headsets with active noise cancellation (ANC) in the microphone and over-ear cup earphones (rather than open-back design). Protection class and robustness (IP protection, reinforced cables) also matter. Manufacturers such as Jabra (Engage series), EPOS (IMPACT series) and Sennheiser offer models specifically for industrial dispatch. Ask us about a demo unit test.
