Pepperl+Fuchs – sensors and signal isolation from Mannheim

Pepperl+Fuchs was founded in 1945 by Walter Pepperl and Ludwig Fuchs in Mannheim. The company has two complementary pillars: sensors for factory automation and signal isolation for process automation, where safe operation in hazardous areas is what counts.

In our range inductive proximity switches form the largest group – cylindrical in the common thread sizes, rectangular, and as slot sensors for cylinder position sensing. Alongside these are retro-reflective sensors, ultrasonic sensors, cordsets and connecting cables as well as isolating amplifiers for DIN rail mounting.

The ultrasonic sensor is the tool for cases where optics and induction fail: transparent films, reflective surfaces, bulk material and liquid levels are detected regardless of the colour and gloss of the material.

Inductive proximity switchesNon-contact detection of metal objects – cylindrical with thread, rectangular for confined installations and as slot sensors for pneumatic cylinders. The largest group in our range, in flush and non-flush versions.	Ultrasonic sensorsDetection through the travel time of the sound echo – independent of colour, gloss and transparency. Designs that stayThe common thread sizes and rectangular formats have been unchanged for years. A replacement device therefore usually fits the existing bracket.

Frequently asked questions

When is an ultrasonic sensor the better choice than an optical one?Whenever the object is transparent, highly glossy or dark, or when dust and vapour obscure the view. Ultrasound measures the travel time of the echo and is unaffected by colour and gloss; it does however need a surface that reflects the sound.

What does an isolating amplifier do that a simple relay cannot?It galvanically separates the field circuit from the control circuit and conditions the signal in the process. This prevents potential differences or interference from the plant reaching the controller – and is mandatory in many process installations.

Which cordset fits my sensor?What counts are connector size, number of poles and cable material. The assignment is part of the type designation; PUR is the more resistant material for moving applications, PVC is sufficient for fixed installation in dry areas.
