The Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) module is a compact, interchangeable transceiver designed for use in compatible active network devices. It is smaller than any other currently available form factor and offers the highest density per interface. A large number of modern network devices are equipped with slots for modular optical transceivers, providing users with maximum flexibility in network configuration. Thanks to its smart design, SFP modules can be installed or replaced during operation (hot-swap).

The choice of an SFP module depends on the cable type (multimode, single-mode, simplex, or twisted pair) and the required bandwidth. Standards such as the Multi Source Agreement (MSA) and SFF-8472 ensure a standardized design and optional features like Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM), which enhance connection monitoring significantly.

SFP modules support bandwidths of up to 1.25 GBit/s and are compatible with Gigabit Ethernet and Gigabit Fibre Channel. Models for multimode or single-mode fibers offer ranges from 550 m to 120 km, making them suitable for a variety of network environments.
