Standards such as the Multi Source Agreement (MSA) and SFF-8472 ensure a standardized design and optional features like Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM), which enhance connection monitoring significantly.

SFP modules support bandwidths of up to 1.25 GBit/s and are compatible with Gigabit Ethernet and Gigabit Fibre Channel. Models for multimode or single-mode fibers offer ranges from 550 m to 120 km, making them suitable for a variety of network environments.
