The Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) transceiver is a modular and replaceable component specifically designed for use in compatible active network devices. It offers a compact solution that enables the highest port density per line interface, making it an ideal addition to modern networks. A significant proportion of today’s network products are already equipped with SFP slots, providing users with maximum flexibility in network design. Thanks to its smart design, SFP modules can even be replaced during operation (hot-swap capability) without disrupting the system.

SFP selection depends on the cable type (multimode, single-mode, simplex, or twisted pair) and the required bandwidth. Compliance with the Multi Source Agreement (MSA) and SFF-8472 standards ensures uniform design and optional features such as digital diagnostics.

With a maximum bandwidth of up to 1.25 GBit/s, these SFP transceivers support Gigabit Ethernet as well as Gigabit Fibre Channel. For network requirements ranging from short distances (550 m) to long-range applications (120 km), various models are available, supporting both multimode and single-mode operations.
