| What is the difference between Microchip's PIC and AVR microcontrollers? PIC MCUs (8-/16-/32-bit) use a RISC architecture with a modified Harvard design, optimised for maximum code efficiency in the smallest footprint. AVR MCUs (8-/32-bit, formerly Atmel) offer a RISC architecture with a simpler programming structure and are widespread through the Arduino ecosystem. Both families are supported by MPLAB X IDE and MCC, making projects easily portable within the Microchip ecosystem. |
| Which Microchip components are suitable for industrial temperature ranges? Almost all PIC, AVR and SAM MCU families are available in industrial temperature variants (–40 to +85 °C, some to +125 °C). These are identifiable by the "I" or "E" suffix in the order code. AEC-Q100 Grade 0/1 qualified variants are available for automotive applications. Lieske advises on selecting the appropriate temperature grade for your specific application. |
