LSI Logic was founded in 1981 and established itself as a leading developer of semiconductors and storage controllers for servers and storage systems. The company played a pivotal role in the development of SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) and was acquired by Avago Technologies in 2014, which subsequently merged with Broadcom to form Broadcom Inc. in 2015. The LSI product line continues under Broadcom.

The product portfolio includes the MegaRAID series (hardware RAID controllers with dedicated processor and cache), the SAS HBA series (IT Mode and IR Mode for direct drive access) and Fusion-MPT controllers. MegaRAID – Hardware RAID Controllers The MegaRAID series comprises hardware RAID controllers with dedicated RAID-on-Chip (ROC) processors and battery-backed or flash-protected cache. Supports RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60, up to 24 SAS/SATA ports, CacheCade SSD caching and FastPath optimisation for SSD arrays. Ideal for database-intensive servers and high-availability production systems. SAS HBAs (Host Bus Adapters) LSI SAS HBAs (9200/9300/9400 series) connect servers directly to SAS or SATA drives without RAID overhead. Available in IT Mode for software RAID (ZFS, mdadm, Storage Spaces) or IR Mode for simple hardware RAID 1/1E/10. Up to 16 ports, SAS 12 Gb/s, PCIe 3.0.
Fibre Channel HBAs LSI Fibre Channel HBAs (Engenio series) for connecting servers to SAN infrastructure. Supports 4G, 8G and 16G Fibre Channel, compatible with leading SAN switches and storage arrays. For storage area networks in data centres and virtualised environments. SAS Expanders & Accessories SAS expanders allow connecting up to 256 drives to a single controller port – ideal for dense storage JBODs and high-capacity storage systems. Answers for IT procurement and system planning

What is the difference between an LSI MegaRAID controller and a SAS HBA? MegaRAID controllers are hardware RAID cards with a dedicated processor and cache – RAID is managed independently of the host operating system. SAS HBAs have no dedicated RAID processor: in IT Mode they pass drives directly through (for ZFS/software RAID); in IR Mode they provide basic hardware RAID 1/10. HBAs are more affordable; MegaRAID controllers deliver higher performance with battery-backed write-back cache.
Which LSI controller is recommended for a ZFS NAS server? For ZFS-based systems (TrueNAS/FreeNAS, OpenMediaVault), LSI SAS HBAs from the 9207, 9210 or 9300 series in IT Mode (also referred to as "IT-flashed") are recommended. ZFS requires direct access to drives without controller caching to manage RAID-Z correctly. These HBAs are also backwards compatible and support SATA drives via SAS expanders.
Is LSI Logic still available now that the company belongs to Broadcom? Yes. Following the acquisition by Avago/Broadcom, the storage controller product line continues under Broadcom Storage. MegaRAID and HBA series are actively developed. Older LSI models (9260, 9270, 9300 series) are available as new and refurbished products, offering a cost-effective basis for existing server infrastructure.
