Retrofit or bypass – which conversion method is better?
Retrofit: low effort, immediate replacement. Bypass: higher efficiency (no ballast losses), longer system life. For individual office replacements: retrofit. For complete hall conversion: bypass.
Can I operate T8 LED tubes with any ballast?
Retrofit tubes: compatible with most electronic and magnetic ballasts. But check the manufacturer's compatibility list – not every ballast is approved for LED retrofit.
How much do I save through T8 LED conversion?
Example: 100 luminaires with 2×36 W T8 = 7.2 kW. With LED 2×18 W: 3.6 kW. At 10 h/day, 250 days/year, EUR 0.30/kWh: EUR 2,700 savings per year. Typical payback 2–3 years.
Do I need an electrician for T8 LED conversion?
Retrofit: replace starter + change tube – can be carried out by trained personnel. Bypass wiring: must be carried out by an approved electrician in accordance with VDE regulations.
