Als RAID-System bezeichnet man einen Verbund von mindestens zwei Festplatten bei dem die RAID-Technologie verwendet wird. Der Begriff RAID stammt aus dem englischen und steht für "Redundant Array of Independent Disks“, was übersetzt "redundante Anordnung unabhängiger Festplatten" bedeutet. Diese Technologie hat zwei Aufgaben, zum einen soll sie die Ausfallsicherheit der auf dem System gespeicherten Daten erhöhen und zum anderen für eine Erhöhung der Datenzugriffsgeschwindigkeit sorgen.

Das Herzstück eines jeden RAID-Systems bildet der RAID Controller. Er ist entweder als Hardwarecontroller in Form einer Baugruppe bzw. eines Mikrochips/Chipsatzes oder als Softwarecontroller vorhanden. Bei letzterem werden lediglich die Funktionen eines Hardwarecontrollers simuliert. Ein RAID Controller verfügt über verschiedene Betriebsmodi, die als Level bezeichnet werden. Sie definieren die Zugriffsart und die Verteilung der gespeicherten Daten im gesamten Festplattenverbund. Je nach gewähltem RAID Level liegt der Schwerpunkt des RAID-Systems auf der Erhöhung der Zugriffsgeschwindigkeit oder auf der erhöhten Sicherheit bei Festplattenausfällen. Bestimmte Mischformen der RAID Level schaffen es beides zu gewährleisten. Zusätzlich stellen viele RAID-Systeme die Möglichkeit zur Verfügung den sogenannten JBOD Modus zu verwenden. Hierbei werden jedoch weder Redundanz noch eine Erhöhung der Zugriffsgeschwindigkeit erreicht. Dieser Modus hat lediglich den Zweck, dem System die Festplatten eines Verbunds als ein einziges logisches Laufwerk bereitzustellen, wobei sich dessen Gesamtgröße aus den Einzelgrößen der vorhandenen Festplatten zusammensetzt.
Für die Anbindung des RAID-Systems an das Computersystem sowie der Festplatten an das RAID-System, stehen verschiedene Schnittstellen zur Verfügung. Neben der Anbindung mittels SATA Schnittstelle, die häufig in Privatrechnern Verwendung findet, wird in professionellen Umgebungen eher SCSI in Form von SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) eingesetzt. Eine Schnittstelle die hauptsächlich für die Hochgeschwindigkeitsübertragung in SAN Netzwerken (Storage Area Networks) verantwortlich ist, und in diesem Zusammenhang genannt werden sollte, stellt Fiberchannel FC dar. Um trotz unterschiedlicher Schnittstellen eine hohe Flexibilität zu gewährleisten, wird mit den Systemen EasyRaid und EonStor unter anderem die Möglichkeit geboten sowohl SAS Festplatten als auch SATA Festplatten in demselben Verbund zu betreiben. Diese Art der Flexibilität macht besonders auf der Ebene der SAN Netzwerke Sinn.
