Even very early computers, such as the Commodore, are all-in-one devices. However, the term was not used at that time, since there was no need to make a distinction to other devices.
One big advantage of these all-in-one computers is the omission of cables. This is not only a cosmetic plus, it also decreases the susceptibility to errors. Another advantage is the much smaller energy consumption compared to a desktop computer made from lots of different components. Due to the small amount of available space inside the all-in-one computer, usually notebooks components are being used.
However, this brings also some disadvantages. Usually the built-in components are much less efficient than the ones built into desktop PCs. Also the generation of heat is much higher due to the small space inside the computer housing.
