HGST – Enterprise Storage with Helium Technology and Datacenter DNAHGST (Hitachi Global Storage Technologies) was developed from Hitachi's hard drive business and acquired by Western Digital in 2012. As an independent brand within the WD group, HGST stands for particularly reliable enterprise storage solutions: from 3.5-inch datacenter HDDs and SAS enterprise hard drives to ultra-fast Ultrastar SSDs. HGST's most notable innovation is the helium-sealed hard drive: by using helium instead of air inside the enclosure, friction losses are reduced, enabling higher capacities, lower power consumption and reduced operating temperatures. The Ultrastar series covers HDDs exceeding 20 TB as well as enterprise SSDs for NVMe, SAS and SATA interfaces.
