Elma Electronic – System Technology for the Most Demanding Electronics ApplicationsElma Electronic was founded in Switzerland in 1961 and has evolved into a global specialist for electronic enclosure and sub-rack systems. The product range includes standardised and custom 19-inch sub-racks, system enclosures, passive and active backplanes, and accessories for integration into card-cage systems. Elma products are deployed in industrial automation, defence, telecommunications, medical technology, aerospace and instrumentation. The sub-racks support all common backplane buses: VMEbus (IEEE 1014), CompactPCI (PICMG 2.x), VPX (VITA 46/65), ATCA (PICMG 3.x) and proprietary systems. Elma enclosures are manufactured to IEC 60297 (19-inch standard) and comply with EMC requirements per EN 61000, as well as mechanical requirements for shock and vibration resistance. ISO 9001-certified manufacturing guarantees consistent quality from prototypes through to series production. |

What is a sub-rack and what is it used for?
A sub-rack is a mechanical carrier system for plug-in electronic modules. It consists of a housing frame with guide rails into which printed circuit boards (in Eurocard format) are inserted. The sub-rack holds the backplane, which provides the mechanical connectors and electrical connections between modules. Elma sub-racks are designed for common standards such as VME, CompactPCI and VPX.

What is the difference between VMEbus and VPX?
VMEbus (IEEE 1014) is a parallel backplane bus established since the 1980s for industrial and defence systems – proven and long-lived, but with limited bandwidth. VPX (VITA 46/65) is the modern successor based on serial high-speed fabrics (PCIe, Serial RapidIO, 10GbE) – significantly higher data rates, for new embedded computing architectures. Elma offers sub-racks and backplanes for both platforms.

Yes. In addition to the catalogue range, Elma Electronic offers an extensive custom manufacturing service for OEM projects. Custom sub-racks, adapted backplane topologies and individually configured system enclosures are manufactured from a batch size of one.
