Ein SPS-System gibt es in kompakten Ausführungen sowie auch in größeren Versionen. Das AS-Interface bietet in diesem System die verschiedensten Schnittstellen wie RJ-11, Ethernet, USB oder RS232, um verschiedene Programmiergeräte anschließen zu können. Mit dem entsprechenden Zubehör ist ein Zugriff auf den Profibus mittels PC oder Laptop möglich, um laufende Prozesse zu überprüfen. Der Profibus erlaubt einen Zugriff auf alle Ein- bzw. Ausgangssignale des SPS-Systems.
Eine Vielzahl an Zubehör macht das SPS-System flexibel und es kann an fast alle Gegebenheiten angepasst werden. Durch an die landesspezifischen Gegebenheiten angepasste Netzteile ist eine konsistente Stromversorgung gewährleistet und die Temperaturentwicklung wird im Vergleich zu einer entsprechenden Batterieversorgung reduziert. Trotzdem gibt es natürlich auch entsprechende Batteriemodule, welche bei einem Stromausfall einspringen.
SPS-Systeme gelten im Vergleich zu ähnlichen Steuerungssystem als äußerst robust und zuverlässig, sind sehr flexibel und entsprechen höchsten Sicherheitsstandards.
