Compaq: A Pioneer in the Computer Industry
Compaq Computer Corporation was founded in 1982 in Houston, Texas, and quickly became one of the leading manufacturers of personal computers. The company was known for its innovations, including the introduction of the first IBM-compatible portable PC. Compaq grew rapidly and became one of the largest PC manufacturers in the world during the 1990s.
Compaq played a significant role in democratizing computers for the mass market by offering powerful and affordable PCs. Through strategic acquisitions, including the purchase of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in 1998, Compaq strengthened its position in the enterprise market.
In 2002, Compaq was acquired by Hewlett-Packard (HP) in one of the largest mergers in technology history. Following the acquisition, the Compaq brand was gradually phased out, but its legacy lives on in HP's products and innovations.
