Sie verbinden über herkömmliche Verkabelung angeschlossene Messinstrumente und Stellglieder mit dem Prozess. Allerdings ist eine SPS nicht vollständig von der Industrieumgebung entkoppelt, sodass Überspannungsspitzen und Übergangsströme durchaus ihre Funktionsfähigkeit beeinflussen können. Um also die angelegte Spannung und/oder Stromstärke anzupassen sowie die SPS mit einer geeigneten galvanischen Trennung zu versehen, sollte pro Ein-/Ausgangspunkt die passende Schnittstelle installiert werden, die sowohl den Spannungs- und Strompegel reguliert als auch einen Trennschutz bietet. Solche Schnittstellen bieten die Relais- und Optokoppler-Baureihen von ABB. Sie erlauben eine breit gefächerte Anpassung der Spannung (von 5 bis 250 V) und Stromstärke (von 0,01 bis 8 A) sowie eine hohe Isolation zwischen Ein- und Ausgang von 2 bis 4 kV. Für hohe Schaltfrequenzen bei geringen Schaltlasten können wahlweise Transistor, MOS-FET oder Triac Ausgänge gewählt werden.
