The world population is growing by around 83 million people every year. To imagine the magnitude of this process, consider the following: the population has grown from 1 billion in 1800 to 7.8 billion in 2020. Agriculture is therefore crucial to our existence and must find a way to provide the best possible performance with the least amount of time and effort.
Agriculture is influenced by many factors - weather and climate change, economic, environmental and political factors, demand and supply issues. One of the biggest challenges in large-scale agriculture - types of agricultural machinery such as tillage, planting, harvesting/gleaning and any industry-specific equipment or accessories attached for a specific purpose - is the efficient management and automation of tracking. The traditional paper records and/or printed maps that they have used for many years are neither practical nor consistent with today's agricultural needs and practices.
And when farmers have a bad year because agricultural problems have resulted in a poor harvest and significant financial losses, many people in the country or region are affected, and these effects can last even for years. Did you know that according to the State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) report, food loss and waste in North America and Europe exceeded 15% in 2019 and over 20% in Central and South Asia? How can farmers today tackle this challenge of efficient machine tracking and management with minimal effort and maximum results once and for all?
Solution
Thanks to rapidly evolving IoT technologies, tracking and managing farm-specific equipment, attachments and/or accessories can be successfully achieved through the combination of GPS devices, CAN bus data adapters and Bluetooth Low Energy 4.X (BLE) ID beacons be performed. The ultimate choice for this matter - Teltonika ADVANCED category GPS tracker FMB140 with built-in CAN data reading function and advanced software version that supports agricultural vehicles (aka ALL-CAN300 option).
ID beacons are small radio transmitters that broadcast their unique identification signal over a Bluetooth wireless connection, which features low cost, high energy efficiency, accuracy and low interference. Beacons are easy to install, deploy, integrate into the existing ecosystem and can be quickly replaced if broken or stolen. They can be configured precisely to customer needs, signal strength and data transmission intervals can be easily integrated into virtually any size and shape of environment. Teltonika GPS trackers support up to 100 beacons simultaneously and each of them, depending on the model, works for 5 to 20 years on a single battery and sends signals up to a range of 500 m.
Here's how it works: BLE ID beacons had to be attached to various non-motorized farm equipment, agricultural machinery, attachments and accessories in order to be monitored and detected. Thanks to the wireless communication principle, the installation process is effortless, quick and cost-effective.
At the same time, the Teltonika FMB140 Trackers should be mounted on agricultural vehicles such as tractors, combine harvesters, loaders, round balers, agricultural and off-road vehicles, etc. Each ID beacon sends a unique signal and GPS devices read and identify them all. The FMB140 then sends this data along with the GNSS location information to a server for analysis.
Special software determines the location of all beacons (and therefore marked agricultural equipment) based on their proximity to the nearest Teltonika tracker attached to an agricultural vehicle. Conveniently, there is no need to log in, authenticate or do anything else - all tracking and recordings are carried out automatically in real time and are accessible to farmers 24/7/365 via any modern device with internet access.
This means they know exactly what work has been carried out in which fields and can plan their further actions accordingly, making it a comprehensive and indispensable choice. The old-fashioned “pen and paper” methods, which are notoriously inconvenient, impractical and error-prone, are becoming a thing of the past. To bring even more benefits and advantages to farms, the use of Bluetooth ID beacons can be successfully expanded to many indoor tracking solutions in warehouses, farmhouses, barns, mills, dairy buildings, etc.
The FMB140 model, like every Teltonika GPS tracking device, offers numerous additional functions that are just as useful as live tracking, such as green driving, malfunction detection, excessive idling detection, immobilizer, towing detection, accident detection, Automatic/manual geofence, trip, tracker configuration and remote firmware update via FOTA WEB tool.
Geofences, for example, are virtual boundaries that a farmer can draw on a digital map in a corresponding software application that is used for location-based events and various alarms. This convenient feature can be used to set up events and receive notifications when a farm vehicle or implement enters or leaves a predetermined area. In addition, zones can also be set up around agricultural fields, warehouses, important locations, security areas, etc.
Remember that ID beacons also enable tracking and simplifying the driver authentication solution. If authentication fails, the vehicle's ignition remains off to prevent unwanted actions. Overall, this ensures automated, hassle-free time, location and action tracking, monitoring and management of fleet drivers.
Wireless external fuel/fluid level sensors (also called FLS or LLS) can be used to measure the current volume of fuel and its changes in a fuel tank. They are used as part of a vehicle telematics system and provide accurate data for measuring remaining fluid level, fuel tank level and drain volume. They also help an agricultural fleet remain responsible and economical and prevent fuel theft from the tanks of motorized agricultural machinery. Wireless communication eliminates the risk of cable vandalism and greatly simplifies the installation process.
Thanks to the combination of malfunction detection, immobilizer, disconnection detection and towing detection, the safety of drivers and agricultural vehicles is significantly increased. In addition, farmers can realize automatic identification of drivers and measurement of working hours using 1-Wire technology, vehicle-mounted GPS trackers and related accessories.
The integrated CAN bus data adapter reads over 100 parameters to ensure timely fleet maintenance schedules and services providing highly efficient, comprehensive and automated management that helps save fuel and time, eliminate downtime and avoid higher operating costs and overhead costs . All this contributes to the ultimate goal that every farmer strives for - increasing productivity and yield with a minimum of effort.
