Cloud Telephone Systems

Cloud telephone systems (hosted PBX, UCaaS – Unified Communications as a Service) move the entire TK infrastructure to the provider's data centre: no own hardware, no maintenance, automatic updates. Terminals (SIP phones, softphones, smartphones) connect via VPN or directly via SIP-TLS to the cloud system. SIP trunking (exchange line) is usually included. STARFACE Cloud and 3CX Hosted are popular solutions in Germany with GDPR-compliant data storage in German data centres. Advantages: cross-site networking, home office integration, scalable (1–1000+ users), monthly cancellable. Disadvantage: dependence on internet connection (recommendation: redundant connection or LTE backup).

Common Manufacturers: STARFACE • 3CX • Auerswald • Telekom • Vonage

Frequently Asked Questions

▶ How much bandwidth does a cloud telephone system need per channel?
A VoIP call requires depending on codec: G.711 (uncompressed): approx. 85 kBit/s bidirectional. G.722 (HD Voice): approx. 90 kBit/s. G.729 (compressed): approx. 30 kBit/s. Recommendation: plan 100 kBit/s per simultaneous channel (including RTP/SIP overhead). For 10 simultaneous calls: at least 10 Mbit/s dedicated upload bandwidth, QoS prioritisation in router.
▶ Is a cloud telephone system GDPR-compliant?
It depends on the provider. For GDPR compliance: data storage in the EU (preferably Germany), data processing agreement (DPA) per Art. 28 GDPR, encryption (SRTP for voice data, TLS for signalling) and clearly defined deletion periods. STARFACE Cloud and 3CX Hosted in German data centres meet these requirements. US providers (RingCentral, Vonage) may be more complicated due to Privacy Shield successor issues.
▶ What is the availability of a cloud telephone system?
Reputable cloud PBX providers guarantee per SLA 99.9% availability (equating to max. 8.76 hours outage per year). Redundant data centres and automatic failover are standard. On the customer side, the internet connection is the biggest risk – an LTE backup router that automatically takes over during DSL outage is recommended.
