ISDN/S0 System Phones – Technical Background & Applications

ISDN system phones are designed for the S0 bus (Basic Rate Interface, 2B+D, 2x64 kBit/s bearer channels) and operate together with an ISDN PBX (e.g. Auerswald COMpact, Agfeo, Tiptel). Compared to analogue phones, system phones provide advanced PBX features: CLIP/CLIR (caller ID display/suppression), MSN assignment (multiple numbers per bus), direct call keys, secretary-boss switching and internal conference functions. Many ISDN phones support Euro-ISDN (DSS1), the protocol standard valid in Germany and Europe (per ETSI ETS 300 102). With the progression of all-IP migration, ISDN phones are becoming rarer; however, Auerswald and Agfeo continue to support legacy systems and offer ISDN-compatible adapters for IP PBX systems. For new installations, we recommend considering IP system phones (SIP, H.323).

ISDN telephone systems as counterparts are in Telephone Systems; IP-based system phones under IP System Phones. We are happy to advise on all-IP migration and selection of suitable transition solutions: +49 (0)7666 / 88499-0.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶ What is the difference between ISDN S0 and ISDN S2M?
S0 (BRI, Basic Rate Interface): 2 bearer channels (B-channels) at 64 kBit/s each + 1 control channel (D-channel, 16 kBit/s). Standard for households and small offices. Up to 8 terminals on the S0 bus (but max. 2 simultaneous calls). S2M (PRI, Primary Rate Interface): 30 B-channels at 64 kBit/s each + D-channel (64 kBit/s) – 30 simultaneous calls, typical for medium and large businesses with PBX.
▶ Can ISDN system phones be operated on an IP PBX?
Yes, provided the IP PBX provides an integrated or external ISDN S0 port. Many manufacturers (Auerswald, Agfeo) build S0 ports into their IP systems so existing ISDN system phones can continue to be used. Alternatively, an ISDN-to-SIP gateway enables old ISDN devices to operate on purely IP-based systems.
▶ When does an ISDN PBX still make sense?
For existing installations with already established ISDN infrastructure, continued use can still be economically sensible for several years, especially if no major expansion is planned. For new installations or planned business expansion, we recommend going directly to IP PBX systems (SIP trunking), as ISDN lines are being successively discontinued by telecoms providers (all-IP mandate).
