Überspannungsschutz – Technical Background & Applications

Surges in TK networks arise from lightning strikes, switching operations or induced voltage spikes and can destroy expensive PBX systems, modems and network components within milliseconds. Standard IEC 61643-22 specifies surge protective devices for telecoms networks – classified from Type A (coarse protection) to Type D (fine protection). DIN VDE 0845-3 supplements requirements for the protection of telecoms systems in German standards. Dehn and Phoenix Contact offer coordinated SPD protection concepts for ISDN, DSL, Ethernet, coax and fibre. Fine protection devices are installed directly at the endpoint (PBX, router, switch) and safely discharge high-frequency surge spikes.

An effective protection concept consists of multiple stages: coarse protection (Type 1/2) at the building connection, medium protection (Type 2) at the distribution, fine protection (Type 3) at the endpoint. Our team advises on protection level coordination and creates lightning protection concepts to IEC 62305. Enquiries: +49 (0)7666 / 88499-0, sales@industry-electronics.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶ Which standard governs surge protection in telecoms networks?
The key standards are IEC 61643-22 (international standard, protective devices for telecoms networks) and DIN VDE 0845-3 (protection of telecoms systems, overvoltages). Additionally, IEC 62305 applies to overall lightning protection of structures. The standards classify surge protective devices (SPD) by test class and installation location.
▶ How do I recognise if my PBX was damaged by a surge?
Typical signs of surge damage to PBX systems: line faults or failures after storms, burnt components on interface cards (visible when housing is opened), total failure of individual ports despite system functioning otherwise, or error code messages from the system. Surge damage to PBX systems is generally covered by household contents or business contents insurance when lightning protection documentation is available.
▶ Do surge protection devices require maintenance?
Yes – SPDs must be visually inspected regularly (annually or after each event). Many modern SPDs have status indicators (green = OK, red = exhausted) or signalling outputs for remote diagnostics. After a lightning event or severe surge, SPDs should always be replaced as their protection capacity may be depleted. Inspection requirements derive from the German BetrSichV and the applicable installation standard.
