TK Distribution & Cabinet Technology – Technical Background & Applications
TK distribution and network cabinet technology forms the physical backbone of every structured cabling and telephone system. It protects active and passive components (switches, patch panels, PBX, UPS) and enables organised cable management. Wall cabinets (9–22U) are suitable for small offices and branch locations with compact space requirements; free-standing floor cabinets (22–47U) accommodate large server racks, PBX systems and redundant power supplies. 19-inch cabinet technology conforms to DIN IEC 60297 and EIA-310-D standards; nominal width 482.6 mm (19 inches), rack units (U) of 44.45 mm. For fibre optic main distribution frames (building internal distribution per ISO/IEC 11801), special fibre optic distribution units with splice modules, pigtails and LC/SC couplings are used. Cooling, cable entry plates (to EN 50085) and locking systems (swing handle, 3-point) increase safety and operational reliability of cabinet technology.
Patch panels for populating the cabinet: Patch Panels. Active network components (switches) are under Surge Protection & Network. Project planning and quotes for complete TK infrastructure: sales@industry-electronics.com.

Frequently Asked Questions
▶ How do I calculate the space requirement in rack units (U)? Count all components to be installed and their rack height: switches (1–2U), patch panels (1U per 24 ports), PBX (1–4U), UPS (2–4U), cable management (1U per 24 patch cables), free reserve (at least 20%). Example: 24-port switch (1U) + 24-port patch panel (1U) + cable management (1U) + reserve = 9U rack sufficient for a small node. |
▶ From what cabinet size is active cooling required? As a rule of thumb: from a heat load of 500 W in the cabinet, active cooling (air conditioning unit or cold aisle concept) should be planned. Passively cooled cabinets with roof fan and perforation suffice up to approx. 500–800 W. Modern PoE switches can consume up to 30 W (PoE+) or 60 W (PoE++) per port – this adds up to 720 W for PoE alone in fully populated 24-port switches. |
▶ What is the difference between a network cabinet and a server cabinet? Network cabinets are optimised for passive and active network components: often with glass front door, narrower depth (600–800 mm), extensive cable management. Server cabinets are deeper (800–1200 mm), often have solid steel doors (security) and are designed for higher load capacity and intensive cooling. For combined installations (server + network), universal 19-inch cabinets with 800–1000 mm depth are recommended. |
