TK Cables & Connectors – Technical Background & Applications

TK cables connect terminal equipment (phones, fax, DECT base stations) to connection boxes, patch panels and telephone systems. RJ11 cables (4-pin, 6P4C) are used for analogue telephone connections and modem connections; RJ12 cables (6P6C) provide two additional conductors for ISDN bus lines or powering terminals. RJ45 patch cables to TIA-568-B and ISO/IEC 11801 in classes Cat.5e to Cat.6A are standard in structured office cabling for VoIP phones. In industrial environments, shielded variants (S/FTP, SF/UTP) are often used to suppress interference from motor frequencies and control cabinets. TAE connection cables connect TAE outlets to analogue terminal equipment per the German building installation standard.

▶ Which cable for VoIP phones – Cat.5e or Cat.6?
For VoIP phones, Cat.5e (100 MHz, 1 Gbit/s) is fully sufficient in most cases, as VoIP only requires a few kBit/s of bandwidth. Cat.6 (250 MHz) offers more headroom and makes sense if the same cable will later be used for 10GBase-T (with Cat.6A, 500 MHz). For new installations, we recommend Cat.6A directly, as the additional cost is manageable and future-proofing is higher.
▶ RJ11 and RJ45 – can they be plugged into the same socket?
Mechanically, an RJ11 plug (6P4C, narrower) can be inserted into an RJ45 socket, but this is not recommended: contact reliability is poor and can damage the socket. Conversely, an RJ45 plug does not fit into an RJ11 socket. For connecting analogue phones to RJ45 outlets, special TAE-to-RJ45 adapters are available that correctly map the pin assignment.
▶ What does S/FTP and SF/UTP mean in shielding designations?
The shielding designation per ISO/IEC 11801 follows the scheme XX/YZZ: the first abbreviation describes the overall shield (U=unshielded, F=foil, S=braid, SF=foil+braid), the second the pair shield (UTP=unshielded, FTP=foil, STP=braid). S/FTP = overall braid + individual foils per pair (highest shielding). SF/UTP = foil+braid overall, no individual shielding. For industrial TK cabling with strong EMC interference, we recommend S/FTP.
