Answering Machines – Technical Background & Applications
Answering machines (TAM) secure business calls outside service hours and prevent loss of customer contacts. Professional TAM models for office environments support analogue (a/b) and ISDN connections, plus integration into ISDN PBX systems with CLIP evaluation (caller ID). Remote query allows listening to and deleting messages by phone via PIN – important for field staff and home office. Some models support multiple mailbox channels in parallel, so different extensions of a telephone system receive individual answering machine functions. In an all-IP environment, the TAM function is often integrated directly into the DECT/IP base station or SIP router.
Modern alternatives to the classic answering machine are voicemail servers in IP telephone systems or cloud voicemail services from SIP providers. Suitable ISDN telephone systems are in Telephone Systems; cordless DECT base stations with integrated TAM in Cordless Phones. For questions on the best solution, call +49 (0)7666 / 88499-0.

Frequently Asked Questions
▶ Can answering machines be integrated into ISDN PBX systems? Yes. ISDN TAMs with MSN assignment (Multiple Subscriber Number) can be operated as separate ISDN terminals on the basic or primary rate interface. Via MSN configuration, the TAM responds only to specific numbers. Alternatively, many ISDN telephone systems (e.g. Auerswald, Tiptel) provide integrated voicemail functions that require no separate device. |
▶ What happens to TAM devices when switching to all-IP? Analogue TAM devices can continue to operate via an ATA adapter (Analogue Telephone Adapter) on the SIP router. More convenient is the use of the integrated voicemail function in modern IP routers (e.g. FRITZ!Box) or a SIP softswitch with voicemail module. Many business SIP providers offer cloud voicemail as an optional feature. |
▶ How much recording capacity do I need? For a small office (5–10 lines), 30 minutes of recording capacity is usually sufficient. Larger businesses with higher volume should choose devices with flash memory and > 60 minutes, or switch to server-based voicemail solutions offering configurable storage per mailbox and e-mail notification (voicemail to e-mail). |
