The Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) is a modular transceiver designed for use in compatible active devices. Its compact design makes it smaller than other available form factors, enabling the highest density per line interface. A significant proportion of modern network equipment is already equipped with SFP slots, offering maximum flexibility for network configurations. With its hot-swappable design, SFP modules can be replaced during operation without network interruptions.

The selection of an SFP module depends on the cable type used (multimode, single mode, simplex, or twisted pair) and the required bandwidth. Standards like the Multi Source Agreement (MSA) and the SFF-8472 specification ensure standardized form factors and provide optional digital diagnostic functions for enhanced network monitoring.

SFP modules with a maximum bandwidth of up to 1.25 GBit/s support both Gigabit Ethernet and Gigabit Fibre Channel applications. Various models are tailored for different ranges and environmental conditions, including extended temperature ranges and long-distance transmission.
