They offer high luminous efficacy, even area illumination and long service life. T8 (G13, 26 mm diameter): the most common design. Lengths 600/900/1200/1500 mm, 18/36/58 W. Operated with magnetic or electronic ballast. Colour codes: e.g. 840 = Ra80+, 4000 K; 830 = Ra80+, 3000 K. T5 (G5, 16 mm): more compact, higher luminous efficacy (up to 104 lm/W), designed for electronic ballast. Lengths 549/849/1149/1449 mm, 14/21/28/35 W. LED tubes (T8-LED, T5-LED) replace fluorescent tubes with 50% lower energy consumption and 30,000–50,000 h service life. What do the colour code digits mean for fluorescent lamps?
Three-digit code, e.g. 840: first digit × 10 = minimum CRI (8 = Ra 80+), last two digits × 100 = colour temperature in Kelvin (40 = 4000 K neutral white).
Magnetic or electronic ballast – what is the difference?
Magnetic ballast (KVG) = cheaper but less efficient. Electronic ballast (EVG) = flicker-free operation, higher efficiency, dimmable possible.
Can I replace T8 fluorescent tubes with LED tubes?
Yes – as retrofit LED (compatible with existing starter and ballast) or as bypass LED (bridging the ballast). Please check the luminaire type.
