Stage boxes (multicore distribution boxes) bundle multiple XLR signal paths in a robust metal housing – for the professional connection between stage (microphones, DI boxes) and mixing desk via a single multicore cable. 8–24 XLR inputs on stage, corresponding XLR/jack outputs at the desk end. Advantages over individual cables: fewer cables on stage, faster setup, professional appearance, reduced fault risk. Stage box with permanently attached multicore cable (10–50 m) or as patch box with separate multicore. Returns: many stage boxes provide additional XLR returns (from desk to stage) for monitor signals – typically 4–8 returns. How long should the multicore cable be?
Measure: stage–desk distance + 20 % margin. Typically 15–30 m for small to medium stages. For permanent installations a fixed-installed multicore with wall-mounted stage box is recommended.
