Veranstaltungstechnik – DI Boxes
DI boxes (direct injection) convert high-impedance, unbalanced signals (electric guitar, keyboard, CD player) to low-impedance, balanced XLR signals – for interference-free transmission over long cable runs to the mixing desk. Passive DI boxes need no power; active DI boxes (battery or phantom power) offer better performance with low-impedance sources and higher headroom. Applications: guitar and bass direct into PA (without mic'ing the amp), keyboard and synthesiser on stage, CD/MP3 player as PA playback source, laptop audio output (3.5 mm) to XLR stage box input. Stereo DI boxes for two-channel sources (stereo keyboards, stage piano). Important: place DI box as close to source as possible, then run balanced XLR cable over the longer distance to the desk. DI Boxes – FAQ
When do I need an active DI box?
Active DI boxes are recommended for low-impedance sources (e.g. active pickups, synthesisers with line output) and for very long cable runs (>20 m). Passive DI boxes suffice for most guitar/bass direct feeds.
Can I use a DI box for balanced signals?
For already balanced signals (XLR–XLR) no DI box is needed – a direct XLR connection is sufficient. DI boxes are designed for the unbalanced→balanced conversion.
