Crossovers split the audio signal into frequency bands and route them to specialised amplifiers and loudspeakers – subwoofer for bass, mid-range driver for mids, tweeter for highs. Active crossovers in 19-inch format work before the amplifier (line-level signal) and offer adjustable crossover frequencies. Use: 2-way split (tops + sub), 3-way split for three-way PA systems. Do I need a crossover for my PA system?
For simple PA setups with active tops and active sub: no – the built-in crossover of the sub handles the split. For passive systems with separate amps and multiple speaker types: yes, an external active crossover is recommended.
