Kindly note the most important changes of the licensing of Windows Server 2019 Standard/Datacenter. The number of licenses is determined by the number of physical processors on the server and by the number of server instances that are to be installed.
One license covers two CPUs. Further options solely depend on the number of virtual machines operated. Windows Standard Server 2019 allows two virtual instances and is being positioned primarily for small and minor virtualized environments.
The Windows Server 2019 Datacenter Edition however allows an arbitrary number of virtual instances and is aimed at highly virtualiued environments. For both the Standard and Datacenter version a CAL (Client Access Interface) is required for every user and every device.
