Free Space Optics (FSO)

 

Free Space Optis offers wireless connections similar to the light transmissions of fibre optics. However it doesn't require cables. Other than radio or microwave devices, FSO devices use light via air as a transfer medium. It sends out light on a frequency of about 785 nm. Lasers are a good solution to connect two buildings in direct sight with broadband. FSO components are designed for use in short to medium distances of about 20m to 5km. Other than WLAN 802.11a/b/g/n the full bandwith is available.

The sustainability of FSO depends on its installation. The laser have to be mounted tightly to the poles. Also it has to be taken care of sunlight, temperature and other influences of the environment like wheather or fog.
