component explanations
Various electronic components are included in this SMD soldering kit. Here you will find brief
explanations of the individual components.
Capacitors act like a small battery, meaning they store a small amount of electricity.
LEDs are glowing diodes that come in different colors. The main feature of a
diode is that it only allows current to pass in one direction, called the forward direction. Switched in reverse direction
, no current will flow.
A transistor is an electronic switch with three contacts: base, collector and emitter.
Current only flows between the collector and emitter when there is a certain voltage at the base.
Resistors are components that regulate or
change the flow of current differently depending on the connection.
A potentiometer is a variable resistor that
changes the current flow by mechanically turning it. A well-known example of a potentiometer is the dimmer, which is
used to change the brightness of a lamp. If you want to change the color of the RGB LED, which
is part of the light ruler, insert a small screwdriver into one or more potentiometers
and turn carefully.
Contents of the SMD soldering kit
A slide switch makes it possible to close or open a circuit so that, for example, an
LED does not light up all the time, but only when it is needed.
A button is a similar component to the slide switch, but the button has to
be pressed constantly to close the circuit. If the button is released, the connection is
interrupted again.
The button cell holder is used to supply power to the device; the button battery is inserted here.
Assignment of the components on the ruler
There are many letters and numbers on the top of the ruler. These indicate where
you should solder which component. For example, “R” stands for resistor and
so on. The installation direction is irrelevant for the following components: resistor, capacitor, button.
Direction is important for these components, but this is easy to recognize because they
can only be installed in one way (one contact on one side, two on the other): transistor, potentiometer.
There is a small arrow on the back of the LEDs. A white line is painted on the ruler at one of the two gold
contact points. The arrow of the LED must point in the direction of the line. If you
no longer see the arrow with the small LEDs, you can
improve visibility using a magnifying glass or smartphone zoom. The RGB LED is slanted on one side, exactly this slanted corner
can be found on the ruler in white. The slide switch has a silver notch on one side, this
must face “up” in the direction of the “S1” label. The button cell holder is
soldered in with the “+” facing up so that the battery slides in from below. In order for a connection to be created,
a little solder must also be applied to the middle contact on which the battery will later rest.
