Button cells: Electrochemical cells with 1.35 to 3.6 volts

Among batteries button cells are probably the smallest variants. Depending on the model they can supply 1.35 to 3.6 volts. They are also referred to as electrochemical cells in the field of electrical engineering. The round cross-section is typical for the button cell. Furthermore, the small cells are extremely flat. Thus, the total height is fundamentally smaller than the overall diameter. The button cells were originally named due to their design. Both their size and their shape resemble a clothing button. Use as a power source

Samuel Ruben has introduced those in 1942 as an energy supplier for the US military.

Due to the different features of the button cells, voltage curves and shelf lives differ. Watches are usually operated with silver oxide batteries. Button cells can be used as allrounder for applicationsm though. They can be found more and more often in LED flashlights and children's toys. In both areas alkaline batteries turned out to be the most common types. If a long-term power supply is needed, it is advisable to rely on lithium coin cells.
