A so called Embedded System is a computer system that is part of other mechanical or electrical systems. Such a system is often integrated into a larger device or machine. Other than the PC, that is designed flexibly to be able to operate a large variety of applications, embedded systems often have very specific tasks. They are for example often parts of washing machines, DVD players, refrigerators, mobile phones and other every day devices.

Due to their special areas of application, embedded systems often have no user interface at all. However, if the device is connected to a computer network, web interfaces are often being used for configuration and administration. They can be accessed with any common web browser.
Interestingly enough, one of the first embedded systems was the so called "Apollo Guidance Computer". This was the computer that was used for navigation during NASA's Apollo program. Although the Apollo Guidance Computer was feared to be one of the weakest components in the whole project, the overall success of the moon landings dispelled these doubts after all.
