NiMH batteries are widely used as accumulators. Their format is similar to that of small batteries. Basically the NiMH battery consists of a positive electrode made of nickel (II) hydroxide and a negative electrode. The latter is made of metal hydride. NiMH batteries are offered in different designs, all of which are orientated to the small batteries. A voltage of 1.2 volts is output per battery cell. Compared to conventional batteries a NiMH battery is rechargeable and therefore more economical in the long run. Due to its size and power they can be used in household appliances. The NiMH batteries have become an alternative to NiCd batteries, which are no longer freely available. The NiMH battery does not contain the toxic cadmium. In addition to that, they have a higher energy density.
