The trend towards ever higher transmission rates is increasing due to the rapidly increasing use of intelligent, mobile devices. The expansion of backbone networks and decentralized data centers is not just a logical step, but an absolute necessity. The latency times required for future applications, such as in the area of transport infrastructure and road users, mean that data rates of ten gigabits per second, which the 10GBASE-T Ethernet variant offers, are no longer sufficient in many cases. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) responded to this and developed the Ethernet variants 25GBASE-T with 25 Gbit/s and 40GBASE-T with 40 Gbit/s over twisted pair cables. Due to the high requirements for the attenuation budget, the maximum length of the transmission path is only 30 meters, which is why the two new Ethernet variants are mainly suitable for data centers, server rooms and for connecting switches to each other.
